Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Planning Permission for my Loft Conversion?
In some cases, yes. Certain types of loft conversions require Planning Permission, while others fall under Permitted Development Rights. However, all conversions must comply with Building Regulations.
At Lofty Ideas, we take care of everything — from preparing and submitting your plans to liaising directly with your local authority. We’ll handle the paperwork and ensure your project meets all required standards.
How much disruption should I expect during the build?
We understand that your home is your sanctuary, so we work hard to minimise disruption.
Our team follows a policy of working externally for as long as possible — especially with Velux and Dormer conversions — and only access the inside of your home when absolutely necessary. This approach keeps noise, dust, and inconvenience to a minimum.
Are you insured to work on my property?
Absolutely. Lofty Ideas is fully covered with comprehensive liability insurance, ensuring complete peace of mind throughout your project.
Who oversees the project and ensures quality?
Every project is overseen by one of our experienced Contracts Managers, who supervise all on-site work and ensure every detail meets our high standards.
In addition, your conversion will be regularly inspected by a Building Control Officer to confirm full compliance with current regulations.
Can you organise plumbing and electrics?
Yes, we handle all aspects of your conversion — including plumbing, heating, and electrical installations.
The only thing we ask you to supply is your preferred bathroom suite or fixtures; we’ll take care of the installation.
Can my loft actually be converted?
Even if your loft looks cramped or filled with trusses, it’s usually possible to transform it.
At Lofty Ideas, we specialise in upgrading roof structures — using steel beams or reinforced timbers — to create safe, spacious, and beautifully finished rooms in even the most challenging lofts.
How long will my loft conversion take?
Timelines vary depending on the type of conversion and design features, but generally:
Velux Conversions: around 4 weeks
Dormer Conversions: around 5 weeks
We pride ourselves on efficient, high-quality work delivered on schedule.
How much does a loft conversion cost?
Every project is unique, and costs depend on your home’s layout and your personal preferences.
For a quick estimate, use our online quote tool — you’ll receive a tailored guide price within 48 hours. It’s a great way to understand potential costs before committing.
What if there’s a water tank in my loft?
No problem! Water tanks are common, and our expert plumbers can easily relocate or reconfigure them as part of your conversion plan.
Can I include a bathroom or en-suite in my loft?
Definitely! Adding a bathroom or en-suite is a fantastic way to increase both comfort and property value.
We’ll assess your existing plumbing system and discuss suitable locations to ensure everything functions perfectly — from drainage to water pressure.
